If you live in England, for example you may rent apartment London, then you may want to escape the city for a while. If you are looking for a slightly different holiday experience and you are leaving your accommodation Manchester, Prague apartment or even your New York apartment, then the beautiful little northern town of Chelmno, Poland. This town is set in the middle of some of Poland’s most beautiful scenery and breathtaking views, and you can see many different buildings and landmarks around the town whilst you are relaxing.
The town itself is very small. There are only around 20000 inhabitants, an eighth of whom are thought to be Jewish. In wartime Poland, there were a few hundred Jews that were living in the town, and like many other places in Poland, the town was quickly taken over by the Nazis.
When you are exploring the area, you should make sure that you don’t miss out on seeing any of the various sights that this town has to offer. In the war, a wall was built around the town. To this day, you can still see the wall, which has been maintained almost intact. Along the wall, you will see numerous watch towers, where the soldiers would keep lookout for any enemies approaching and the entrance is at the Grudzidzka Gate.
As well as the town wall, you can pay a visit to the town hall, where parts of this elegant building are as old as the 13th century. You can sometimes have a tour of the town hall, which is certainly recommended if you are interested in the local history of the area.
As well as having a strong Jewish past, the town has a strong protestant connection. This is certainly evident with the five separate gothic churches that you can visit if you wish. The Church of St Mary was built in the late 13th century and it was once the main church of the town. A former Franciscan church, which was rebuilt at the start of the 19th century, is the Church of Nicholas and Jacob. There are three other such churches in the town that you can visit too.
The town has been the home to many people of importance throughout history, including several entrepreneurs, composers, a philosopher, bishops and rabbis.
Around the right bank of the Vistula is the beautiful Chelmno landscape park, which is a protected area of land, which was named after the town itself.
This picturesque little town has plenty of history surrounding it and you will enjoy learning about its past. The location and scenery provide the perfect spot for a relaxing vacation, and there are plenty of places where you can take a walk or hike in the surrounding areas too.
